Both of my children attended WSTES and did well, however my youngest child, Taryn Cook, truly excelled there. The learning and hands on experience Taryn received as part of the Culinary Arts program allowed her to gain invaluable knowledge of kitchen, restaurant and catering skills. Chef Tomachek lead the program with real world experiences, offering her students the chance to use their skills in a variety of settings. My daughter’s other teachers were also great and she learned a great deal of general knowledge the serves as a base for her college classes and life. In short, I am impressed with WSTES and their commitment to partnering with parents to raise respectful, responsible adults.
I was in the Culinary Arts & Restaurant Management magnet at school and graduated in June of 2020. When I left, I had three certifications and a lot of experience in many fields. WSTES taught me interview and networking skills, hands-on classroom experiences, out of school catering events, and good work ethic. The annual Career Fair hosted at my school was very helpful and taught me a lot. I had a great time in my four years there finding it was pretty easy to find a balance between my friends and schoolwork. I was given a lot of opportunities and had challenging work.
Being at Western provided opportunities that I knew I couldn’t receive as a student at my local, designated school. Not just because it is a magnet school, but because of the staff and students that I have met over the course of my four years. No school is perfect—and that’s what makes one feel like they belong. As students we have come together to make more out of what we are given, and at Western I found that although it has its weak points, it what great when we could collectively come together as a community to make everything work.
