Western Albemarle High School Reviews

WAHS has as many flaws as it does strengths. The academics seem to be all over the place, as well as the quality of the teacher. There are some fantastic classes here, but also some classes everyone understands are terrible, and that's just how it is. The vibe here is generally okay, you just have to look for the classic stuck up rich white kids or the pretty hostile, more rural type. The food's fine. Despite the pretty mediocre academics, I think most teachers here have a good vibe and are hard to dislike. Most. This goes to staff as well, super super friendly front office/counselors. There's a pretty major vaping problem here, but if you just steer clear of it it's chill. Our sports are super super good, unless it's the only sport that people like to watch! Overall like, it's fine. You can imagine a better school, but any school is going to have it's flaws. Western in bearable, sometimes fun if you have the right mindset. Just got to play it the right way.
My experience at Western has definitely left me with mixed feelings. I'd say teachers are generally pretty good, and academics-wise I learned a lot, but I had to put in a lot of effort to actually get the educational experience I wanted. On the good side, the food is good, the school is small but generally clean, and the science facilities are amazing. Admin though, not so much. They absolutely will not listen to the students, generally do not care about their well-being, and have been pretending to address the racism and homophobia issues existing at the school for years while not actually doing anything to protect minority/LGBTQ students.
Personally, I love Western Albemarle. The people are great and all my teachers teach well. It’s really easy to make friends and most everybody is welcoming. The only thing bad about it is the lack of diversity. I would guess that Western is 95% white, if not more. There isn’t really a way to change that, but compared to the schools in Charlottesville there are is a lot less diversity. The school lacks the opportunities to meet people that are different than you and learn from them. The cons of the school are there, but are minor. Overall, I love Western!
