I moved to New Jersey at the start of my Sophomore year of high school and really didn't know what to expect from a completely new environment that was so foreign from anything I had ever experienced. I found that the change would be an absolutely wonderful thing for me that reframed my entire view of high school education. The diversity at this school baffled me as I had come from a very white very religious state, Utah. There were people of every race, identity, social status and religious affiliation. This created such a great environment to learn because everyones differing perspectives could shed light on many subjects I would have never even considered. This school was also extremely supportive of students personal activity choices. It allowed me to thrive in choir and theatre in a safe and supportive environment that truly allowed my confidence and passion to blossom. It really was an amazing experience where I felt supported by teachers who cared about and for me.
The school's education system is beyond great. The majority of the teachers are passionate, well-educated, helpful, and kind. The school has a plethora of interesting and useful classes. Despite all of this, the school's atmosphere and culture are not the greatest. Most of the sports teams are mediocre so games are rarely packed. Very few people participate in spirit weeks. The student body, at least through my experiences tend to be the stereotypical suburban student body which has led to many rough experiences in the school (at least for me personally). I was raised in the city and with a way different childhood than those who have attended this district their whole life (the majority of the student body). Because of that, I feel very misunderstood in this school and tend to lose friends a lot more often than I am used to due to things like principles, loyalty, honesty, etc. I really love the school but do not love the people who make up the school.
This school has lots of AP (and some IB) classes. Lots of opportunity, lots of clubs and organizations. Music programs are top notch for the state. Honors classes are rigorous enough to prepare for the demands of AP ones and 90% of students will be college ready in four years, even if they are not academically inclined in the start.
Unfortunately, the environment is toxic and stress permeates the student body. Self h*rm and certain ideation is very common, so therapy and positive coping skills are 110% needed. If you feel unsafe, ideate or self-h*rm, PLEASE reach out to anonymous therapy groups, (like 7 cups), join discord servers for mental health (disboard has a lot of good ones) and if your finances allow for it, try to find a therapist (even online) who you can talk to.
With this in mind, it is great school compared to others and will prepare you to deal with work stress and improve your efficiency exponentially.
