There was lots to enjoy about West Springfield high school. I always enjoyed coming to school and spending the day with my friends whilst knowing I am going to receive the highest quality of education on a daily basis. When I was a junior and a senior, the teachers did not apply much pressure on their students, making the students fully responsible of their own work and letting us decide when to turn in our assignments. This helped me excel and put less pressure on me as a student, knowing the primary goal of my teachers were to help us learn and not stress and cheat to receive high grades. There was not much to dislike about this school. One thing I wished would improve is the school culture. There is a hefty amount of bullying across all grades. The kids that are bullied do not seem to have much help from the school. The school talks about not bullying, but do not provide much action. Other than that, I had a great experience and wish I could relive these amazing four years!
At West Springfield High School, they offer many support systems such as counselor involvement when students need help emotionally, academically, or for college readiness. Teachers also strive to support students by providing after-school review sessions, test corrections, and overall questions. Students work extra by collaborating with classmates and teachers for assignments and strive to get their grade higher. West Springfield High School also provides numerous advanced placement and dual enrollment courses so that students can receive college credit and a glimpse of college courses. In addition, there are a plethora of clubs and new ones each year that cover national honor societies, cancer awareness, volunteer opportunities, and a ping pong club. There are also an abundance of sports teams for freshman, junior varsity, and varsity, so that every athlete has a chance to showcase their talent. Therefore, at West Springfield, students are provided with endless opportunities.
Overall, I had a really good experience at West Springfield! There are many different activities to get involved in and opportunities to take. Additionally, the quality of education is very high. Most of the teachers are fantastic and really care about their students. Despite this, I have heard some black students say they experienced racism at West Springfield, so I think administration needs to create spaces where they can hear from black students and students of color in general and implement change accordingly.
