I transferred to West Seattle High School my senior year of high school, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The school was helpful in the transfer process and it was not difficult. When I transferred, however, I was unable to play for a varsity sports team because I was a transfer student. We had online classes until after spring break, when we transitioned to a hybrid online/in-person model. I went to school twice a week, and was online for classes the other three days. It was nice to be able to meet my teachers in person, but there was very little social interaction with other students, which was one of the main reasons the school cited for returning to in-person.
Most of my time at West Seattle High School has been amazing. I've made many friends and enjoyed my classes. Most teachers are passionate, friendly, helpful, caring, brilliant, interesting people that have definitely improved the school. In particular, I have enjoyed the math programs, classes, teachers and curriculum. Along with the teachers, the staff are invested in keeping students happy, healthy and learning at every moment of the day. Other students are a joy to be around and it was very easy to find people I enjoy hanging out with.
The protocols during covid have also made me feel very safe, and they are continually improving on them. Online school was rough but it lead many of my teachers to be more invested in our lives.
If I could change one thing, that would be the funding. Little to no funding goes into the theater and band programs each year, and both of these programs are very large. I have found myself immersed in these programs, but they need more funding.

My 4 years spent here at West Seattle High School has left me with fond memories and an unforgettable feeling of inclusion. I will miss it. Everyone felt like distant family relatives and the staff here could also be called friends. If given the choice to choose a different school, I'd stay with WSHS. Go Wildcats!
