Honestly terrible. No one gives you recognition unless you play a well-known sport. The district itself puts no effort towards academics, wellbeing, health, and safety, only cares about athletics, Teachers are a complete joke there, most are terrible with a handful that is excellent. SO underprepared for college prep and the college itself, had to figure most out by myself. They don't set kids up to succeed in college. So upset I had to go to a school that was this terrible. I liked nothing about this school. They try to act like we are safe by wearing our ID's, but anybody would be able to easily walk in the school with our elderly security guards.
I had a good experience at West Islip Senior High School. They offered a lot of classes that challenged me to be my best. The teachers here are amazing and care for each and every one of their students. I wouldn't change a thing about this school and I consider myself very lucky that I got the opportunity to attend this school.
Relatively average high school, but the teachers care. Administration seems to be in it for the money, very rarely listening to what the students and parents have to say.
I love the arts/music program. I was always in the school musicals, I played the viola in our orchestra and was a member of our chorus. My favorite part was a singing and dance group called vocal motion. We put on 2 shows during our junior and senior years, but unfortunately due to covid - we are no longer able to perform. This was always the highlight of the school. We would go to the elementary and middle schools and put on a performance. When I first witnessed the show in 5th grade, my goal was to make this group...and I did!
The school has a fantastic music department. The various bands are a ton of fun to be a part of and an all around great experience. The school has many high level STEM classes and a robotics team that competes under FIRST robotics.
Teachers and staff are very helpful and I feel very safe in the school environment. There are many opportunities for all students.
I liked how some of the teachers tried their best to make sure that we were okay and that our grades were improving.
I think it is a very healthy environment and a great school. The teachers are great and the sport programs are wonderful.
During my time here I have seen the school change in many ways and mostly for the better. The school has gotten cleaner and even during times of crisis I sill enjoy my time here. Some things I do not like are the closed campus of the school, recently they removed privileges from the seniors and now I am not allowed to get lunch. It is a small flaw but not important.
All the staff are nice, and well rounded. I've met many people here that have shaped my life in ways that I could never imagine.
West Islip High School is a really nice school to attend. Not a very large school, but does not feel small. For the most part, teachers really care about student success and being prepared for the future.
The academics at this school are great. They offer a wide variety of classes, including college level and AP courses. The teachers are extremely friendly and educated. The school also provides a lot of extra-curricular activities, such as clubs, music groups, and sports.
Overall, my high school experience with "West Islip Senior High School" was fairly good. One thing I appreciated about the school system was the amount of electives offered for all different fields of study. For example, in college I chose to study business so I was exposed to electives such as Social Media Marketing, College Marketing, and Fashion Marketing. Another thing I appreciated about my high school was the opportunities for college credit with AP, IB, SUPA, and other college level classes. If I had to change one thing about my high school experience I would want to see more hands-on career counseling because my friends and I were practically on our own when figuring out what we wanted to do in the future job wise.
Id like to see a more caring environment with more focus on students. Administration focuses on non important issues rather than their own students.
When being asked to rate my high school, I am hesitant to give a low rating yet I am unsure about a high one due to the mere fact that I am a student and realistically few students admit to loving their school. The reason for my inability to give five stars is the diversity lacking and sports prioritization over academics which holds true at many schools, but most prominently mine. I understand high school should be about education in terms of learning information about both the world and one's identity, yet when one overrides the other it leads to the schools failure to educate as it is expected to. With this being said, I am a student athlete and I accredit my involvement in the classroom and on the turf equally responsible for getting me where I am in now as a college-ready student thanks to the recourses my school provided. Therefore, I rate WIHS three stars. While the cockroaches and lack of respected authority tempt me to lower this, the school does have redeemable qualities.
You can do a lot of things at West Islip High School. There is a place for everyone; from band to sports to clubs to student government to volunteerism.
I made many friends and acquaintances during my time here. Most of the teachers were very kind, supportive, and actually love their jobs. But as with everything, there are a few bad eggs. The current principle is a very compassionate and funny many that actively involves himself with the student body in a positive way, everyone loves him. The only problem is the increasing amount of wannabe gangsters trying to act like they run the place.
