West High School, while not the greatest school, could be a lot worse. It could also be a lot better. As a white, high middle class CIS girl, I am well aware that I have a very sheltered view of the school. Even then I still have many issues. Students are often greatly divided by their race and social background. Also, many students often don't have the resources to be able to do much of the work assigned. The safety of the school is also called into question after multiple students have been found with guns and drugs. My biggest complaint is with the school administration. The school board usually makes decisions without full understanding of the situation. This includes the instance of them threatening to fire my Latin teacher if she taught us grammar. That all being said there a many good things as well. The actual building is beautiful and all rooms (excluding the bathrooms) are as well. Most of the teachers, councilors and even security guards are available for students.
My experience at West High was very interesting and eventful. It had it good and bad times throughout the last 4 years I’ve been there. It wasn’t easy to adjust to a new state and school when you don’t know anyone. It was very hard to get used to but eventually it became some of the best memories, I’ll always treasure going forward with my life. West High could have changed for the better like being a better community in which students of all race can be treated equally and fairly. Overall, West High School can be the place for you if you learn to adjust to it’s environment. It may seem like you’re out of place but as time goes by, you’ll soon love and cherish each and every moment you have.
West truly is the best! Their academic programs are very good and theirs is a lot of variety. The school is diverse which exposes students to many different cultures and opinions. That helps students find their true self while being open to all ideas, voices and cultures. Couldn’t think of a better place to get my high school education from.
