Every day that I walk around West High, I see people from different backgrounds and skin color intermingling in the halls. I am proud to be attending one of the most diverse high schools in the United States. This culture has truly influenced our student body and community with a worldview that continuously shapes us into well-rounded individuals that will help us become future leaders of an undivided society. But since we reside in Alaska, we lack opportunities for students to pursue higher academic and athletic interests. Therefore, I sincerely believe that it would be greatly beneficial for our community if there were more academic, athletic, etc. opportunities offered in our state. This way, students are able to explore their fields of interest in a much deeper level, spark their passion, and find their niche in the real world. This will give more students a chance to chase their dreams, give back to others, and make their mark on the world.
West High School is a great place to get an education, just not the best place to hang out. West has a lot of students that its building is not prepared to accommodate. The passing periods are crowded with lots of student pushing and trying to get past each other. I guess that is not something that can be easily changed, it is just one of my observations. Also I feel like the administration needs to trust students more. I understand that we are all teenagers, however it seems like whenever I go to the counselors office or the main office for help I am immediately met with suspicion and mistrust. Don't get me wrong I think there are a lot of awesome people that work at west, but sometimes I feel like it is an institution rather then a school where students just want to learn in an environment where they feel excepted and supported.
