Specialized Clasrooms & Services

Each class contains an average of 8-10 students with two teachers - a Head and an Associate Teacher. Students also work directly with a dedicated team of counselors & clinicians who work collaboratively to meet each child’s needs. Smaller groups of 3-5 students are used for core academic areas including reading, writing, and math and are instructed using a multi-sensory, direct instruction model.

My son is going to middle school after 5 yrs at this warm and nurturing school, and the progress he’s made has been extraordinary. My son is intelligent, quirky and sensitive, and needed a flexible environment. Thanks to WEDS, he has developed confidence and resilience, as well as self awareness and advocacy skills. The kids have a range of learning styles, and my son had a group of engaged kids to learn with. They do not use a scripted social skills curriculum—the teachers use positive reinforcement, seek to authentically connect with the kids and try to help them work out any issues, help them develop perspective taking and coping skills, and listen to the kids’ opinions! (My son hated scripted approaches like “is it a level 1 or a level 5 problem?”) The school also worked collaboratively with us to support him. My son loves and trusts his teachers and school friends, and I believe this wonderful and impactful little school has laid the foundation for his next step and beyond.

West End Day School is a wonderful, nurturing community of teachers, clinicians, and students! It becomes a second home for those stepping through the doors, and a place that alumnae want to return to for years after graduation. The individualized academic and social-emotional programming allows the school to meet all student's needs. Additionally, the thoughtful and involved administrators and counselors provide incredible support for parents looking for partners in their child's learning.

West End Day School (WEDS) is, simply put, a very special place. From the moment one enters the building, the vibe is calm, order and warmth. WEDS accomplishes what we all wish every school could: instead of having the students meet some arbitrary "statistical bar" of what is expected of them, the school meets the children where they actually are, both academically and emotionally. Led by Carrie Catapano, I am genuinely awed by the concern, professionalism and proactive approach the entire staff displays on a daily basis. The intimate size of the classes coupled with the impressive competence of the staff convinced me that this was the right place. I wasn't wrong. Instead of being labeled "problem children", students feel loved and are treated like valuable members of a small but growing community. If you are considering WEDS for your child, come and see for yourself. I believe you will be as delighted as I am.
