We joined the Waynflete community during the pandemic and could not have been more impressed. Coming from NYC, our frame of reference were high caliber schools, with strong academics and an emphasis on social emotional support. I wondered if the kids would experience the same in a smaller city and smaller school. I was blown away. Running a school during the pandemic is no small feat, and the administration at Waynflete handled it beautifully with clear communications and well thought out contingency plans. The kids were in school in person nearly the entire year. The small class size and individualized attention has resulted in increased confidence and grasping of new skills with openness and excitement. Both my children have learning differences and they have been supported with tutors, occupational therapy, and teachers who monitor their needs and progress with care. I've loved getting to know the diverse parent community and felt a warm welcome when we arrived.
I wish I could go back and repeat my education at Waynflete. Three of our children went through Waynflete. Each had totally different interests, motivations and life goals and the school was a good match for all of them. The teachers are passionate about teaching critical thinking and how to be learners for life. They don't simply teach for test scores. Their focus on creating well rounded individuals who can write exceptionally well and advocate for their positions in small groups or with a large audience is impressive. The school also emphasizes being community and world aware. These values are present in all three levels of the school -- lower, middle and upper. When my youngest daughter got her PhD, she specifically called out Waynflete as setting her on the right trajectory in STEM. The few times we had concerns during our 14 years with kids at the school, the administration and teachers reacted with utmost professionalism and excellent solutions.
Our three kids have had an exceptional 1.5 years thus far at Waynflete and we have excellent things to say about the teaching staff, administration, and culture that has been built at the school. Every teacher is intensely committed and focused on seeing students not only grow from an academic perspective, but also as a person - developing the skills necessary to navigate the evolving world around us. Each teacher our kids have had thus far are true educators who are committed to seeing their students succeed AND working with parents and the administration to make sure there is a true team supporting the development of the student. As a result of this, Waynflete has developed a culture that balances both excellence and psychological safety, while focusing on the whole child. There are very few schools in Maine that have the resources and passion to pull this off, and Waynflete is certainly in the top of that group.
