Prior to joining the Watkinson Board just this year, I had the opportunity to attend graduation for the past few years because of my husband’s involvement with the school. I’m so glad I did! I was incredibly impressed with the structure and approach to graduation. It’s all about the students—as it should be! All graduating seniors are invited to present something that represents their experiences at Watkinson and what it has meant to them. Most students choose to participate. They sing, dance, and speak. But what they really do is inspire, amaze, teach, and convince the entire audience that they are ready to go into the world. The students provide clear evidence that they are truly scholars, athletes, artists, actors, and so much more. They are passionate! The presentations are truly outstanding. The school’s culture is one that helps every individual student by opening windows, rather than putting up barriers.

As Vice President of Leadership Greater Hartford, I have the opportunity to work with high school students in our youth programs, Common Ground (during the academic year) and Summer Nexus, our one-week leadership program held in August. We are always thrilled to have students from Watkinson in the class—they are eager learners, collaborative team players, articulate and confident leaders. They stand out among their peers from other high schools in the region as inquisitive, self aware, open to new ideas and new challenges. Their maturity is noticeable and noteworthy. I wish I could wave a magic wand and find a way to give all students the kind of education that Watkinson provides!
Watkinson is a school for every type of learner. Individual attention by teachers in small classes ensures success! I had 3 kids go through Wat and they each benefited from these close teacher relationships.Wat goes deep in academics. Instead of AP classes, teachers individually challenge the students to push themselves. The school culture is so positive and empathic! No cliques here. Respect and civility is at the core of this community as is teaching kids to advocate for themselves and to have a voice. Critical thinking is stressed. College counseling is offered in a sophisticated but sane way without creating an tense competition. Yes, the School is small but the relationships make up for it. And If your child really wants to “play” sports and not sit on the bench, this is the school for you. The committment to public service is serious and thoughtful and opportunities for foreign travel are numerous.
