We came from outside LAUSD and I have to say, I like the school better than I expected. Although bureaucratic, even during Covid teachers and staff are professional, adaptable, and skilled. The IHP students are challenged to their ability and learn a lot. I’m happy that my child’s needs are being met and that includes during a major pandemic. Unfortunately I get feeling the principal doesn’t support the IHP program at all. In fact, he seems to have a distinct dislike for all honors students in the different academies. The campus is large but the division into different academics make it a more intimate experience. I really wish their was an equivalent program for high school and that we didn’t have to drive so very far.

I would say that the IHP is probably the top middle school in Los Angeles. Accelerated, interesting and thoughtful. Teachers are amazing. There is a test to get into the school, a letter from a teacher and an application, almost comparable with a top private school. It is incredible that LAUSD has not harnessed this model and duplicated it. This is the education excellence that parents are looking for. Cons are - no Spanish language arts.
Walter reed is a very good middle school, however I think they need to add more safety precautions. Personally, ever since a man with guns was seen outside my school, I haven't felt safe ever since. I only recommend the school if you are planning to go to the program that I am in, IHP. The other programs have students that are not very committed to school and do some iffy things.
