My experience at Walt Whitman High School was relatively positive. When I look back at my high school experience I will have lots of wonderful memories thanks to the community that Whitman provided for me. The staff and administrators care a lot about the students and strive for each individual to do well while feeling comfortable in their surroundings. There are a lot of club opportunities that range from sports to charity to movie club. I personally love to go to football games and participate in the school spirit. There really is a place for everyone. As for classes there are lots to choose from and many great opportunities for developing academic interests. Overall, Walt Whitman gave me a really rewarding high school experience and I am proud to say that I definitely feel prepared for college next year. Go vikes!

I received an excellent education at Whitman, and made many meaningful connections with peers and teachers. However, Whitman, while academically outstanding, is not very diverse in race, ethnicity, religion, or political ideology. Unfortunately, while I have never been on the receiving end myself, I have peers who have experienced racism, sexism, and homophobia at Whitman. In recent years, the administrators have been taking important steps to make Whitman a more tolerant place, and I believe that with the support of the community, this can be achieved. I would also like to see a change in the academic culture. Whitman students are very high-achieving, but there is a huge focus on college readiness, which combined with parental pressures can lead students to care more about their letter grades and less about their learning.
Whitman is an incredibly stressful place. Students put an immense amount of pressure on each other to take all honors and AP courses, participate in extracurriculars, have a prominent social lives, all while maintaining straight A’s. Half the teachers are so amazing and understanding about the difficultly of juggling other classes, extracurriculars, mental health, etc. However, many teachers are unapproachable and pile up mountains of work for you to do with no leniency regarding deadlines. The school is just beginning to take steps towards dealing with the huge issues of racism, sexism, and homophobia that are unfortunately extremely prominent in the area. Although there are many negatives about the school, the best part of my time at Whitman was being a part of Whitman Drama. No matter how awful my day was, it’s a separate place to be with friends and create something amazing together. You become family with people who are so dedicated to the arts and it’s truly magical.
