Walt Whitman has a very rigorous curriculum that prepares students for college well, but causes an unpleasant atmosphere. Everyone is very competitive and there is a lot of pressure to succeed. This has caused greater levels of depression and anxiety among the student body than I have noticed in other schools. Otherwise, I have been very lucky to attend a school as safe as ours. The students are all friendly and accepting. There is little to no discrimination and there are a lot of school clubs/events that promote diversity as well as other current social issues.

What I most enjoy about Walt Whitman is the school spirit. The abundant opportunities within sports, clubs and extracurriculars is extraordinary and allows students to be involved in all manners. Attending sports events is highly anticipated, and offers students and opportunity to relax and socialize with one another. The academics are incredible and have a wide range of classes, though tougher courses (such as AP's and honors) are expected to be taken throughout the four years.
I thought Whitman provided some of the greatest opportunities that any high school had to offer. For example, working with teachers, department chairs, and even the principal, I was able to find an internship at the National Institutes of Health where I interned for two years and produced an award achieving research project. I was introduced to my interests through this opportunity as well as hard and rigorous courses including but not limited to, Anatomy, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and Physics.
