Wakefield High School sits at the heart of Wake County, surrounded by vast, lush hills, and beautiful architectural relics. The school ranks high in test scores, specifically in the fields of Math and English; and there are dozens of Science and CTE electives to keep the young minds busy. And though I am one of those students, that maintains a 4.3 GPA and is involved in many service clubs, I am also an art student. And the arts department of this school has devolved into the forgotten department (clever, I know). Don't get me wrong. I love Wakefield! However, the arts programs do not get the proper funding they need, such as the small choral department, which receives only a few thousand dollars a year. In addition to this, the amount of shooting and bomb threats that Wakefield receives per year is ridiculous at this point. I have been at this school for three years now, and I still wonder exactly how these threats are being dealt with, because I know that ultimately, they are not.
I loved my experience here at Wakefield High School and I would not change the past four years for anything! All my teachers are very nice and the sports teams are very well put together and organized. However, there have been many incidents throughout the past four years that could've been easily prevented. Such as senior pranks getting out of hand to random school fights in public areas. Overall, I had a great time here and Wakefield has definitely prepared me for college.
My experience with WakefieldHS was great! I loved the diversity and acceptance within the school community and the determination the teachers have with students, they make it their business to help every student pass. Although I wish I gotten more involved, there are many organizations and clubs to join for anyone with any interest. With my experience from WakefieldHS, something I think should change is the students’ voices not being heard. I’ve learned that whenever there is a time for students to express their opinions, no one is listening and it all comes down to the principal and administration. All in all I am proud to be an alumni of Wakefield High School and Class of 2018!
