Veterans Memorial High School Reviews
Rating 4.08 out of 5 52 reviews
My senior class of 2020 would have been the first class to complete all four years of high school and graduate since our class was the one that opened up the school back in 2016. As a brand new school, we had the opportunity to create all new and lasting traditions that would leave a legacy. Although cut short by the pandemic, the teachers I've had have undoubtedly made me the person I am today by instilling in me a strong work ethic, determination, and have a true genuine care for the well-being of their students. The relationships I've had with not only the teachers, but the students is one i'll never forget! Although our class has definitely had its fair share of hiccups and being used as a guinea-pig class, I firmly believe that the Veterans Memorial class of 2020 is a true testament to the importance of resilience and that was made possible through the opportunities and environment that the school, teachers, coaches, and administration has provided their students!
The school looks very nice, and I did enjoy learning here. However, there were issues relating to administration and counseling that made the experience less enjoyable. This school is on its fourth principal in the six years since its establishment. I have also had front office workers and a "psychologist" exacerbate my mental health struggles. I put psychologist in quotes because this "professional" likened Autism Spectrum Disorder to sociopathy.
Although I enjoyed my time at Veterans Memorial, I believe that there is a large issue with the teaching. At times, I found that some teachers intentionally made their class difficult to keep up reputations, or, some would be rather unfamiliar with the content. Due to this, I found that some classes had to be self taught, as the teachers would not be able to accurately and competently explain topics. Despite this, I do believe that there are some teachers which are incredible in their facets, such as Mrs. Kean-Dawes, who are not only comforting and caring of their students, but knowledgeable and are solid in their information.
Although the school has its ups, I believe that the fact that the most important factor - teaching - deeply drags down its capacity.
