Vestal Elementary School Reviews

1 review
The kids do okay, but there are some serious issues with this school. Particularly, the concern over meeting benchmarks overwhelms the classrooms, resulting in a heavy focus on students sitting and memorizing vast amounts of data and processes rather than understanding the material. Punitive actions tend to be more psychological, resulting in children focusing inordinate amounts of time and attention to things like not having letters of their name erased. Most awards and prizes focus on celebrating mediocrity and don't even offer a head nod to the actual behaviors, achievements, and personalities of the students themselves. Recess is only offered half of the days because gym is used as a substitute on the others. When asked why, school teachers and administrators explain that they only "have to" offer 30 min of physical activity daily. P-t conferences consist of reading test scores. Teachers can't seem to find the time to actually get to know your students, since they are too concerned with students' test scores and how those affect employment.

Let me be frank. This is not a failing of the teachers. It is a failing of administrators and application of benchmark standards. And it is unacceptable.
