Vernon Hills High School Reviews
Rating 4.26 out of 5 378 reviews
As a high school senior at Vernon Hills High School, this school has provided me with a variety of opportunities that aided me throughout my high school career and so on. The overall school culture makes the school safe and inviting for all students, especially new incoming students. There is a plethora of college resources at Vernon Hills High School that help all students, regardless of how they decide to go on with their future. Overall, Vernon Hills High School is an inviting learning space that boosts confidence in students both academically and personally, preparing them for the challenges ahead of them in life.
From the teachers and coaches to students and even our lunch, everything has gone really well so far. I love how my school has valued students so much over the past years. We do things such as karaoke and playing music in the hallway to increase our dopamine levels. Having my freshman homecoming outside so people could have more space because of Covid-19, turning our main office into somewhat of a radio station having trivia with Hispanic heritage month Even taking time to highlight my peers and just overall creating a fun high school experience is something that my school is exceeding at. I also love how much enthusiasm and care many of the staff here has when teaching and creating relationships with the students. It helps me know that they want us to know that we're seen too. But, this school is not a 5/5. They favor upperclassman, underfund a few of our sports and it is right next to a water reclamation facility which stinks. Literally.
Vernon Hills High School is arguably excellent. It houses outstanding teachers and thus has equally outstanding academics. However, there is disingenuous feeling when it comes to diversity and the administration's handling of diversity. The administration says they care about everyone, but most of the staff still acts like upper-middle class, white, cisgender, heterosexual, able-bodied, and neurotypical life is the default for all students. That assumption couldn't be farther from the case, and because so much of the staff tiptoes around true otherness, students who don't fall into these minorities do the same. This creates an environment far from the inclusive one the administration tries to foster. If the administration began working more closely with students in different minorities, began listening directly to their perspectives, the school would certainly earn the five stars that their academics suggest they should receive.
