I started at Valley New School in 2014, I was in 7th grade. The school is focused around personalized learning, which allows students to grow as human beings and learn about their passions and things they are interested in. Valley New School has helped me figure my passions and learn about what my strengths and weaknesses are. VNS (Valley New School) has students from grades 7-12, which allows for younger students to be mentored by the elder students. The school helps it’s students enter the real world and prepare them for life. There are not many things that I dislike about VNS, but there is one thing that I would like to change about the school. Even though the school prepares students for life, it doesn’t prepare them for college very well. I have learned note taking skills and time management, but I have not learned about or read traditional things that I would have learned in traditional school.
Valley New School was life-changing for our son. The project-based learning environment teaches students "how" to learn and challenges them to work independently. Students must master classes like Algebra (which our son took online) before moving on, so it's learning that sticks. We are grateful to have this charter school in our community! Extra-curriculars like sports and music are completed at another area high school, which worked well for us.
VNS is an excellent school. Because of the allowance of a nontraditional academic approach, students are able to pursue their passions while learning and developing fundamental life skills. Nobody wants to be treated like their insignificant and just another student in a class. Cookie cutter students from overpopulated public schools usually don't get the chance to explore their true interests. Here, students are encouraged and praised for thinking outside of the box. VNS has been a massive source of unconditional support and academic advancement for me. I highly recommend this style of learning to anyone and everyone. It has proven extremely effective.
