From Vail Mountain School

Vail Mountain School is a K-12, coed, independent day school in Vail, Colorado that offers a rigorous, college preparatory education to day students and international students hosted by local homestay families. VMS is located 100 miles west of Denver and takes full advantage of our location in the Rocky Mountains by integrating outdoor education opportunities. Our program is enriched by ample opportunities for cross-age interaction, service learning and robust athletics.

To achieve this goal, faculty at VMS are singularly focused on one thing--your child. They bring their passions into the classroom and develop deep, caring relationships that inspire a true love of learning. Our teachers pay close attention to the social, emotional and academic needs of each individual, adapting curricula and lessons that fuel the fire more than fill the bucket. Put simply, a good school knows your child by name, a great school knows your child by heart.

Vail Mountain School is the best educational institution that I have been to thus far. The Vail Mountain School curriculum is extremely rigorous, with a heavy emphasis on collaborative emotional intelligence at almost every step of the curriculum. In addition, the wonderful staff and educators are available to guide and encourage students to strive for success, excellence, happiness, and most importantly, mindfulness. In my experience, the educators at Vail Mountain School are more than just teachers, they are mentors who do an excellent job in addressing each student to their personal needs inside and outside of the classroom. The culture at Vail Mountain School creates an environment where students become leaders of their community, and students gain the confidence required to speak their mind. All these factors contribute to a truly holistic experience that prepares students to think critically, be open minded, be caring, and be confident going forward into college and beyond.

At VMS, there is a great sense of community. Being in a cross-age environment has allowed me as a senior to connect with lower schoolers and have relationships with some of the younger students, that would not be possible without this community. The Academics at VMS allow students to follow their passions, especially in the upper school with offering an accelerated math, science, English, and history track. There are also special courses offered, like AP Art and AP Music Theory that are not offered at other schools. I have been able to take an accelerated science and history track, while continuing to be involved with the dance, band, and theater programs. The interterm and orientation opportunities available at VMS are also really unique and have given me experiences and memories that I would not have at any other school.
Our family is very pleased with the experience our son enjoys at VMS. He is in first grade and has already dived deep into academics, arts, social-emotional growth and leadership. A whole-child approach means that he gets to build during Tinkertime, sing during Mandarin, read during math and music, and develop leadership skills in PE. The teachers are passionate experts who meet each child with enthusiasm; the class size means getting personalized attention every day of the week. He is firmly connected to the older students and other teachers and faculty outside of his classroom. We wanted a place that our child could be curious, think for himself, love school and develop a lifelong passion for learning. VMS is just the place for that.
