University Place Elementary School Reviews
Rating 4 out of 5 3 reviews
University Place was the first school in the system to adopt the "Leader in Me" program and received national recognition for its implementation of the program. That mentality infuses the system. Every student is expected to develop leadership skills, speak a common language that focuses on achieving goals, and have a job at the school. Students take ownership of their parent-teacher conferences beginning in the second semester of kindergarten and are able to present and articulate their academic strengths and weaknesses to their parents. The teachers and administration are all on the same page with this approach and it shows.
Overall, the school is safe. They have good policies and practices to ensure that children are picked up only by those authorized to do so. There are no significant problems with student discipline. I am aware of one situation where a child was aggressive toward my child, but the teacher intervened and is aware of that child's tendencies. The situation improved significantly as the year went on. I think there's room for improvement on the side of health programs and resources. The school has a garden that it uses for teaching purposes and, in the past, for nutritional lessons. I think that could be a springboard for greater emphasis on healthy eating and expanding students' exposure to good nutritional habits.
The school's building was severely damaged in a tornado in 2011. The building has been rebuilt and re-opened in 2013, so the facility is mostly brand new and entirely refurbished.
