This is an amazing school and it offers about as much opportunities as a private school would. The small amount of people in each class makes it seem like a family and the school does a good job of making a fun yet educational learning environment.
The English, Social Studies, Science and Arts (Performing and Visual Arts) departments have a wonderful curriculum. However, the math department does not have teachers that are ready to teach the students going along with the school's curriculum and have changed nearly every year over the past couple years.
I enjoyed how diverse the courses were and we got to learn so many different subjects every day. We had 9 periods each day which included my favorites, Band and Art. The work load may have been a lot, but it prepared me for the workload I have in college.
The teachers are all very kind and caring people. However, I feel that the education is lacking. The school often tries to implement "new" curriculum but this system creates lesson plans that do not build on the previous year, forcing students to start from scratch. The school facilities are also run down esspecially the bathrooms.
Communicative and genuine staff. Questions and concerns are addressed immediately; ability to work cohesively with parent and student. The faculty at the school are very on top on curriculum; quick to return work and monitor progress of students daily or weekly, depending on parents preference. Teachers are always available for extra help and are quick to reach out to students if they notice quality of work is not up to par. I've listened in on quite a few zoom sessions for all of sons teachers and am truly happy with every single one of his teachers. They treat their students with respect and patience. Thank you ULS TEAM! - Happy Parents & Student
At University Laboratory School (ULS) student are given the opportunity to excel. Being a small school allows students to have more one on one time with teachers and allows students to receive more attention if needed. The students at ULS all demonstrate the meaning of aloha, are very welcoming to newcomers, and will be more than happy to be of assistance or provide guidance.
I first began attending ULS in the ninth grade. I was able to participate in sports the summer before school had actually begun which gave me the opportunity to make friends. Playing sports made my transitioning into this school a whole lot easier and led me to the friendships I have today. Although the curriculum was a bit different to what I was used to, the teachers were very helpful and took the time to talk me through the school work and help me adjust.
I believe that no change needs to be done to this school. My experience at ULS has been very enjoyable and has allowed me to create many great memories.

Itʻs a good small school that helps build personal connections with the students and the faculty. As a student I really enjoyed how small the classes were so that I was comfortable working in small groups and getting to know the teachers. As for the school environment, I was able to make friends with the upper and lower class-men.
I loved most everything about the Lab School. I was a student since 6th grade and I have seen a lot of changes in the 7 years I've been a student there. There are times where I do think that our school lacks in, like AP classes or Honors program, but students are still able to get into schools that other high school students in the state are able to get in. Your classes are set and you are required to take music and art every day for your time there.
University Laboratory is a school that provides quality education that gets you ready for college. The STEM, English, music and arts program are especially good. It is a great opportunity to be able to get music and art class every day.
The educational experience is like nothing else. The small class sizes make for a great learning experience and can have many benefits. Teachers can offer a lot more help and get to know each student on a personal level, unlike other large public schools. We have core classes on a daily basis as well as music and art. Our education is the school's top priority and it clearly shows. We are constantly challenged and pushed to think creatively and efficiently. Our facilities could use a lot of renovation and improvements but there isn't much the school can do since the property is owned by University of Hawaii at Manoa so the process takes a long time.
University Laboratory School is a research-orientated elementary and high school. Students have the opportunity to be exposed to an alternative and experimentative curriculum. School starts at 7:45 and ends at 3:15 for middle school and high school students. Students are required to take eight classes a day and only have options for what type of music, art, and elective they would like to take. The facilities are extremely poor due to the University across the street having the last approval for many grants and rebuilding plans. Air conditioning, however, has been installed in a couple of the rooms. The teachers are some of the best in the state and are always open to discussion with the students. Going to University Laboratory School creates a family-like atmosphere, so the lackluster facilities don't bother students much (excluding the toilets that don't flush occasionally.)
Great school, great community! Small grades and small classes make it feel like a family, and the teacher really get to know you (for better or worse)!
It's an alright school, but definitely not near the best at all. Very small, boring, and limited opportunities. You get to know everyone but that's also the bad part. You can't really change friend groups or experience anything different. The buildings are also in pretty poor condition and the campus is very small.
I cried a lot because of this school. We didn’t get the chance to do a lot of things throughout the seven years I attended such as homecoming, Senior Luau, and our Prom is with the entire high school. There aren’t many clubs aside from STEM related subjects and although the arts are pretty good, there’s no drama or musical theater like other schools.
Overall, I enjoyed my time at UH lab. I mainly loved the relationships I made their because truly I felt like that entire school became one family because it was such a small school so everything was more interactive. I wouldn't give it a full five-stars mainly because of how some situations were dealt and that the learning strategies were a little slow for my liking.
I had a nice experience at this school. There was lots to do. Teachers were hands on and sports were top notch.
My school is good at academics and they have been improving in the athletics program. This school is made for kids who don't need help with staying on track or need extra motivation. This schools' curriculum is very fast-paced and the teachers don't take extra time to help the students who struggle in their classes. The facilities at this school are mostly outdated (such as the bathrooms, locker rooms, etc.) but there were new AC units installed throughout the classrooms in the main buildings. The administration is old-fashioned and needs either new leadership or more diversity. Otherwise, the school is good.
