During my experience at University Laboratory School, I found that the most positive trait is the small class number. Each 9th to 12th grade class is only about 58 people. This allowed relationships of the students and teachers to become very close. A small class created a environments where it was comfortable for me and the rest of my peers to ask questions and personally seek individual help with the teacher. In addition learning together with the same 58 people allowed me to grow very close to the kids in my class. It strengthened friendships and also gave the opportunity to learn how important it was to get along. Unlike large schools, we can't just form new friend groups, in a small class we are forced to communicate, learn, and make things work with each other. It increases our social, commutation, and learning skills. The one thing I would change about this school would be more experiences outside of the classroom.
University Laboratory School is a research-orientated elementary and high school. Students have the opportunity to be exposed to an alternative and experimentative curriculum. School starts at 7:45 and ends at 3:15 for middle school and high school students. Students are required to take eight classes a day and only have options for what type of music, art, and elective they would like to take. The facilities are extremely poor due to the University across the street having the last approval for many grants and rebuilding plans. Air conditioning, however, has been installed in a couple of the rooms. The teachers are some of the best in the state and are always open to discussion with the students. Going to University Laboratory School creates a family-like atmosphere, so the lackluster facilities don't bother students much (excluding the toilets that don't flush occasionally.)
At University Laboratory School (ULS) student are given the opportunity to excel. Being a small school allows students to have more one on one time with teachers and allows students to receive more attention if needed. The students at ULS all demonstrate the meaning of aloha, are very welcoming to newcomers, and will be more than happy to be of assistance or provide guidance.
I first began attending ULS in the ninth grade. I was able to participate in sports the summer before school had actually begun which gave me the opportunity to make friends. Playing sports made my transitioning into this school a whole lot easier and led me to the friendships I have today. Although the curriculum was a bit different to what I was used to, the teachers were very helpful and took the time to talk me through the school work and help me adjust.
I believe that no change needs to be done to this school. My experience at ULS has been very enjoyable and has allowed me to create many great memories.
