While the student population isn't the most diverse, and the grounds aren't anything special, the teachers I've had at this school have been incredible. Mrs. Prior of the mathematics department is the only person on the planet that could have gotten me through AP Calculus. Mrs. Tkach in the history department is incredibly engaging and actually made me enjoy history in her APUSH class (which is a massive feat). Mr. McGowan taught me and so many others to LOVE AP Biology and we had the BEST time in his class debating which part of the cell was the best and having a GENUINE "FRIENDS"GIVING FEAST! All of the staff at Union Mine are the reason that I have hope going into my college years. They have pushed me to be the best I can be and have taught me so much throughout my years here. They make Union Mine awesome.

Union Mine High School is great in the sense that it is fair, accepting of everyone, supplies Advanced Placement classes, and has skilled and exceptional teachers. The campus is beautiful and sophisticated and everyone at this school is very mature and kind to one another. Although this school has many great things, one thing that it can fix is making an effort to include students and allow them to feel comfortable being spirited and involved in activities. Some students feel pressured to act a certain way and have no encouragement to be daring and try new things out.
I am pleased with the block schedule because it allows for more in-class time to learn and do homework. Instead of having 7 or 8 classes worth of homework every night, I only have 4. Being a newer school, Union Mine has a beautiful, open campus in a rural town that gives a sense of security and freedom. We have a great athletics program and our VAPA programs are there with it. Being in a more conservative town, we do have some cultural/racial tension and this is a problem at Union Mine but we have great teachers and students who stand up to try and shift this negative behavior into more positive interactions. We have dealt with tragic losses and hardships in our community but in those difficult times we come together as a school and as friends for strength and guidance and we pull through.
