From The Winchendon School

A better way to do high school - since 1926.

How do we do this? We put an emphasis on community. Students learn better when they connect with the people around them. At The Winchendon School, students discover themselves while building life-long connections.

Here, we are guided by real-world learning. Classes are energetic; teachers design active environments where you'll lead discussions, debate questions, and draw your own conclusions. We don’t give the answer; rather, we guide you to find it on your own.

Our Signature Programs: Global Dynamics, Service Learning, and ColLABs reflect our commitment to providing a rich and relevant education.

I have loved being a part of The Winchendon School. Our Executive Director is a visionary, and the faculty and staff are warm, caring, and professional. The community is a small, safe, and nurturing one for students, and the faculty challenge students to be their best and to take appropriate risks. The students come from all over the world and from many different states. Whether freshmen or post-graduates, they find value in the small classes, the co-curricular activities and athletics, the Service Learning and ColLAB programs, and the regular opportunities for self-reflection and feedback. Our alumni visit the School(s) whenever they can, and they love hearing the news about the satellite campus growth. The Winch is a great place, whether in Winchendon or in Brooklyn!

Winchendon is a mediocre school that could be better and rank higher if they invested more into their teaching staff, class offerings, support services and facilities. While there are some good teachers, many are young, lack experience and expertise in teaching to different learning styles and seem dispassionate about teaching and developing their students. The culture is more of a "jock" and a "party" school and students come here mainly for sports like hockey and baseball, with the hope of college sports scholarships. They are investing more money and energy into their Brooklyn campus, while the MA campus has old facilities and lacks a library or student center, or the full offerings of AP classes. The students seem more laid back and friendlier than some other schools, but they also aren't as academically studious. There is a definite drug, vaping and party culture, and some dorm parents seem to look the other way, or discipline punitively rather than growth oriented.
My daughter is currently a student at The Winchendon School. She transferred from our public high school this year. The experience for her has been great! She has made so many friends with such different backgrounds and it has opened her up to a whole new learning experience. The teachers have been amazing! I’ve had the pleasure to sit with each of her teachers for conferences and I was amazed at how well they each knew my child. She wasn’t just a number in the class. That speaks volumes. She is getting a great education here.
She also plays on the girls varsity hockey team. Being a part of their team has allowed her to take her game to a higher competitive level and create a bond with her teammates that I’m sure will result in lifelong friendships. Her experience at Winch has been fantastic and I am confident she will be more than prepared for her journey to college with the education ,life skills and opportunities that The Winchendon School is providing her.
