Waverly is a unique gem among the dozens of schools in the San Gabriel area. It offers both a developmental and college preparatory (yes those things can and do co-exist) for students in preschool through grade tweleve. It is an ecclectic community of students, parents, and teachers. It is not for kids who need grades to motivate them. Students who are creative, intelligent and self motivated will do well here. Think small liberal arts college as opposed to huge university. That is the vibe of this wonderful school!
Waverly is great in terms of small class sizes and hands on learning. I've made some great friends and had unique experiences. However, classism, racism, sexism, and homophobia are rampant at the school and the administration does nothing to address these issues. Nepotism is also a huge problem. Beyond this issues, because the school is so small we're denied a lot of classic high school opportunities, like field trips abroad, homecoming/dances, sports, and a wide range of classes.
Waverly is unlike any other school in the Los Angeles area. It promotes community, education and the overall understanding that kindness matters. My son has had the most unbelievable experience with the teachers, students and faculty. How many people can say that their teenager considers school their favorite place to be. In addition he was accepted into all but one college that he applied to. The teachers not only teach, they care.
