From The Town School

At Town, meaningful learning happens across classrooms, disciplines and grade-levels. Our school motto, "let there be joy in learning," is not a charge but a lived experience. Our teaching is constantly informed by over 100 years of educating children; our commitment to a an inclusive school community; and accomplished, dedicated faculty, who are lifelong learners themselves, drawing from the best research and practice. We believe that this is the environment in which children learn best. This approach is what distinguishes us - and our students.

I am inspired by Town’s intelligent, committed, collaborative efforts that place our students at the center of their learning. Whether in the science lab, on stage, at a robotics tournament, on the basketball court or when engaging with our local community, Town students are confident and accomplished risk-takers, leaders, problem-solvers, scholars, and citizens. Town alumni/ae thrive in high school and beyond.

I went to Town from Kindergarten through Eighth grade. I so loved my experience that I've stayed involved with the school twenty-plus years later, and I have maintained life-long friendships. I work in the writing world now due in no small part to Ms. Siegel's fifth grade English class. I still remember Bridge to Terabithia! Ms. Siegel opened my eyes to reading. It was first time I stopped looking at the page numbers.

Having no high schoolers really allows for Town students to grow into leaders and to take on active roles in the community. In the upper school, fifth through eighth grades, I served multiple terms in student senate (sadly I lost in my eighth-grade presidential bid). Playing ten-plus competitive soccer and basketball games starting in fifth grade not only helped improve my skills on the field, it gave me a head start on learning to be a teammate and a leader. These experiences served me well later when I would be captain of multiple varsity teams at Dalton.

The Town School was invaluable for both of our children. They were more than prepared for high school and college. They left Town in 8th grade secure in their abilities. They were willing to take risks, think critically and effectively express themselves in writing and public speaking with confidence and ease.
Town instilled a deep sense of responsibility to others and to the world. Even years later, Town friends are like family and their friends’ families are an integral part of our lives.
New York can be a stressful place and Town was truly an oasis. As parents we will always be grateful for the stellar education and holistic, enriching experience that our kids had at Town!
Town has been an amazing place for both of my kids, and for our whole family! My son started at Town in Kindergarten, and from the beginning, we knew it was such a special place. As such, we made the decision to pull our daughter from her preschool (which we loved!), so that she could join him at Town, starting in N3.

While some places a slogan is just a slogan, Town literally lives the mottos of Joy in Learning and Joy with Purpose. The way they manage to weave together topics throughout different disciplines is amazing. It allows for true learning and understanding in a much broader way than I ever experienced throughout my early education. This approach also sparks real enthusiasm for the topics, which fosters interest and excitement to continue digging deeper. I wish I had been taught this way – I might actually remember something!
