Speyer has been amazing for our daughter since kindergarten. The children are abuzz with a love of learning. Every student is smart and has different strengths, but the best part is that they all celebrate each other's accomplishments. Even though it is a school for gifted/bright learners, it is not a hotboxing environment. There are kids who love debate and chess and equally kids who write beautiful prose and poetry, or perform on musical instruments and participate in dance. Students break out into smaller groups and work collaboratively on the "lawn" outside their classrooms. 8th graders typically graduate well beyond traditional 10th grade math, but what's more impressive is that they are already independent, critical thinkers well before they move on to high school. Parents also have a tight-knit community and are deeply engaged with the school.
Our family has been at Speyer since Kindergarten; our child is about to enter eighth grade. We have been constantly impressed by the teachers (especially in the Humanities), and by Speyer’s dedication to challenge students to grow intellectually and ethically. Our child has learned how to write well, to analyze topics critically and professionally, and to think about issues from both a philosophical and practical viewpoint. Further, Speyer’s emphasis on community building through group work and field trips allows students to see beyond the four walls of the school to become global citizens. Perhaps what we love most about Speyer, though, is that our child can try anything: soccer, track, play writing, poetry, math…. Speyer has fostered all of our child’s interests, and as a result, we have watched this child transform from a teeny 5-year old into a confidant, smart, well-spoken teen who is excited about learning and loves going to school.
At Speyer all the teachers and students are super friendly. The academics is fantastic in 5th grade we were learning synthetic geometry, and in history we learned about ancient civilizations. Speyer is a very warm school with lots for people who care about you. Although I would say that the community is really what makes Speyer such a great place. In other schools they don’t focus as much on the inside of there school but the outside; this meaning they only care about reputation. If your looking for a good kindergarten or a fantastic middle school Speyer is a great option.
