From The Putney School

What is The Putney School? In spite of our rural exterior, Putney is not a simple place. We are both creative and grounded, visionary and practical. We are a community of people who think for themselves, invent, design, experiment, compose, write, build, and chase down new ideas. Thinking and doing are interwoven at Putney. We are progressive, so we value experiential education, the idea that people often learn best by doing, rather than by being told. Students here view education as something they are pursuing, rather than something being done to them. We see education as the creation of intelligence rather than the transmission of information. We are both academically rigorous and culturally informal. We take our intellectual tradition seriously, but do not wrap it up in formalities.
We believe that teenagers are capable and trustworthy. Students play an active role in running the community and are part of every decision-making body of the school, including the Board of Trustees.

Some wonderful academics, values, and community. The school fosters passion in each student and helps push students to pursue their interests and gain a hands on experience. The way students are taught and engage with one another helps build confidence and self awareness. The largest issues I saw when I attended was a startling lack of racial diversity and an unwillingness to address racial biases of the students and faculty on campus. That is it's largest pitfall, the tokenization of students of color.

I like the Putney School because it offers progressive education to those looking for a way to take their learning into their own hands. It also encourages diversity in language, people, lifestyles, cultures, and ideas. The discussion-based classes allow for students to gain confidence in participation, speaking, and analysis skills. Students are also encouraged to build relationships with teachers outside of the class room settings.
I am currently a four year senior at Putney. Putney changed my life for the better and going to Putney was one of the best decisions I've made. I met some of the best people I will ever meet and have had some of the best teachers I will ever have. It's truly such a special place and the perfect place for creative, open-minded, caring individuals.
