From The Philadelphia School

The first day of school for TPS was 50 years ago. Today, we remain a leader for the preschool-8th progressive education on which we were founded. We know that when children and teachers are partners in their learning, it brings a deeper understanding to their studies. It creates confident, curious, and compassionate children who advocate for themselves and others. Together, students find their place as learners and as individuals. And this learning happens EVERYWHERE – in our city, in the country, and in the classroom. Connecting our lessons to the real world helps children understand how they fit into the big picture. It happens in a community built upon relationships that welcomes diverse perspectives. We discover together, laugh together, make mistakes together, and learn together. TPS graduates emerge as confident leaders with a true sense of self and confidence to take on what’s next. We’ve always thought outside of the classroom. We’ll be doing the same for the next 50 years.

Environmental education has been integral to TPS since its founding in 1972. Kindergarten - eighth grade classes spend a day each week in the fall and spring at one of the many outdoor classrooms located within city limits such as the Wissahickon Creek, Awbury Arboretum, and Bartram's Garden.
