I think the teachers were the best thing going for the New School. With a few teachers recently leaving the school, it will be interesting to see how things turn out. The academics depend highly on which classes you choose to take - some are extremely difficult, and others are relatively easy. However, the fire safety of the school is an absolute joke. I hope that with the school becoming a non-profit, the parents and students put pressure on the school to spend whatever is necessary to make sure everything is in compliance with the applicable fire codes.

Even if some teachers are not good enough, The school is good overall. If you have not got too much expectations from your school, this school will be enough for you.
The New School is a great fit for our family. The student body is welcoming and the faculty thoughtful and reflective about their work. Unlike larger schools, students get a lot of personal attention and are encouraged to think critically about a range of issues. The structure of the courses allows teachers and students to explore unique topics in more depth than typical curricula allow. The portfolio and exhibition processes require students to truly be responsible for their own learning and understand how it applies to the larger world. This is in sharp contrast with multiple choice assessments we have observed at other schools. As for a the social environment, there is much less pressure to fit in with a certain crowd than often occurs at larger schools. Staff and students truly appreciate the unique perspectives and strengths that each person contributes to the community. Many activities are organized by students themselves and we have found that our son has been able to be involved in more activities than would have been possible at a larger school.
