The McGillis School Reviews
We had such high hopes when we started our children there. With many administrative changes, not having a true vision of academics - which they reinvent the wheel every year - and how to help kids that either need more education or are dealing with a challenging peer they were unable to help us. We invested our resources, time and energy to a school that were not welcoming to us. We were extremely disappointed in the end result. So, we went public and are flabbergasted at how better the academics are and parents are truly kinder, administrators are held accountable and our kids are loving it and us parents too! It may not be a Ritz Carlton school with French Laundry food, but who needs that? My kids want to learn and us parents want to me with people who are loving and kind. That shouldn't be too much to ask?? A complete fraud, as one parent, who also just left, mentioned to us. Shame on us for staying as long as we did.
We love this school so much and have since the moment we started kindergarten so many years ago. The teachers, administration, staff and community are all in it for the very best reasons - to help kids learn how to think and see beyond themselves. To be pushed academically and to quote that old but still very relevant bumper sticker, “think locally, act globally.” The school does not pay mere lip service to its mission statement, it lives it every day whether it is the door held open, the joyful high five from a family group member, the sound of an entire school counting down to the start of the winter holidays, the love that is poured into the incredible food, the coffee in the lobby (every morning!) the conversations both lighthearted and serious with teachers who work so hard for their students. This place is one in a million.
While no school has all the answers and all the techniques to educating children, McGillis is pretty close to the ideal school. It's ethics-based education has taught our child that school is much more than achieving good grades to get into an Ivy-league school. That said, we feel that the scholastic success is on par with any prep school in Salt Lake. We would have no problem recommending this fine school to anyone.
