Master's Academy is no longer the great school it once was. Leadership changes in last three years have resulted in negative changes to the entire school experience. While there are great teachers, many quality teachers have left recently. The school doesn't adhere to it's own enrollment polices and admits students with criminal records, disciplinary and behavior history thus greatly impacting the overall student population. Students have experienced bullying find little resolution. Admin is hostile, dismissive and blame the parent and student for ongoing issues. Parent concerns brought to the Admin are ignored and unanswered. Reports of a teacher's inappropriate and abusive behavior toward students are not taken seriously. The verbal and abusive behavior of one faculty member is so egregious that state agencies should look into the matter. Parents and students are afraid to speak out out of fear of retaliation. There is no accountability with the leadership and no transparency.
I transfered to The Master's Academy in the beginning of my junior year along with my sisters (freshman & senior). It was daunting coming into the new school due to high expectations and standards as well the intense vigor of many of the classes. However, I was lucky and had a few key teachers who gave me guidance and encouraged me to improve and adapt to the school. However, my sisters weren't as lucky and had a few teachers that were unorganized and at times rude. I shared this experience in my senior year with an advisor of a society on campus. The leadership needs to grow and become consistent in their discipline of students and classroom standards. Despite its flaws, Master's helped me grow and gave me many opportunities and experiences I would not gotten elsewhere. I specifically want to command the arts department, who made my last years of highschool memorable, and the guidance team who helped me going into Master's and who helped prepare me for college and my future.
I attended TMA 6-12th grade, graduating valedictorian. I want to caution parents considering sending their children into such a high control, questionable environment considering the good public school resources. I did have 2 teachers there (over 7 years) that made an enormous difference. I was academically neglected in science due to the school’s “values,” which made pre-med undergrad more difficult. In addition, I first hand witnessed outright ignoring of students hardships in order to maintain the proper TMA image. This was quite a few years ago, and change is possible, but I also see in the current non-discrimination policy that gender & sexual identity are notably left out. That is no mistake. There was deeply harmful and consistent rhetoric towards youth during my MS & HS years, particularly in chapels, that affected both me and even more so my friends in the LGBTQ+ community. It was not a good environment to grow up in. Please strongly consider alternatives.
