From The Loomis Chaffee School

The Loomis Chaffee School is a renowned New England boarding school located on a 300-acre campus in Windsor, Connecticut. Chartered in 1874 by five siblings whose children all died tragically and who then selflessly determined to found a school as a gift to the children of others, Loomis provides our students with the best education — an education in which excellence in teaching and learning is shaped by the why, as much as the what, and every member of the community shares a commitment to the best self and the common good.

I attended Loomis from 2008-2011 and absolutely loved my time there. I was a boarding student and came in as a new sophomore. Loomis provided the perfect balance of academics, sports, and social involvement. The school forced me to expand my understanding of the world around me and how I wanted to shape my future. The majority of teachers and other staff are deeply dedicated to the success of their students in all aspects. The variety of options in classes was especially important for me coming from a high school in New Hampshire with somewhat limited options.

The one area I felt could use some improvement is support for students on financial aid. I sometimes felt out of place compared to some of my much wealthier classmates.

I have mixed feelings about Loomis Chaffee. The teachers and academics are great! I transferred from a private day school to Loomis sophomore year, and was amazed by how much more the teachers seemed to love what they do. Loomis's classrooms, library, and underclassman dorms are great, but it's upperclassman dorms could be much better. The food is pretty bad, and I hope that it improves. There seems to be tension between the students and the administration often, and I wish there was a greater sense of mutual respect between the two.
We've had a couple of family members attend over the past eight years and they both loved it. Many wonderful cultural aspects in addition to strong academics and the wonderful Head of School, Sheila Culbert, a strong proponent of international and racial diversity.
The advising system would benefit from having more experienced staff members assigned when the student begins Loomis Chaffee and stay with them throughout their time there.
    Overall, a special place.
