The Leffell School Upper School Campus Reviews
Rating 4.13 out of 5 40 reviews
Having had two students attend high school at Leffell, I can honestly say it is a very special place with Jewish values at the core of the school experience. No school is perfect, but most of the teachers care deeply about the individual students and their learning, and the administration is generally accessible and open to feedback. Student life is robust for a school of this size with many sports, clubs, activities, and community service opportunities. The arts could be stronger, but these programs seem to be growing over time. STEM is a big focus with most students opting in to the 4 year Engineering & Entrepreneurship program. The school has a very strong sense of community among students and families. The spring of senior year is a highlight with 2 months spent in Israel and Poland followed by internships or independent projects until graduation. All in all one of our best decisions as parents was sending our kids to Leffell.
Really, things are a hit or miss here. Some teachers are genuinely great people that make class fun and interesting, and, in the worst cases, some teachers are bordering on emotionally abusive. The school does not provide proper accommodations for students with mental health issues, disabilities, and chronic illnesses. This is made worse by the long hours and, often, you will go a month or two without any tests, essays, or projects, and then have to do 1 in every class within a couple of weeks. I think this would be made a lot better by cutting out unnecessary classes (advisory, mandatory tefilah every single day, activities), shortening the 70 minute first period, and not requiring we take every class every year. Administration needs to listen more to feedback, especially surrounding specific teachers and classes.
My three children have all attended Leffell; the youngest is a senior. Her high school experience has been fantastic -- academically, socially, and Jewishly. She's had many opportunities to get leadership experience. She has excellent relationships with her teachers. Our family has gotten so much from The Leffell School and its community. We feel lucky to have chosen this school for our kids.
