I attended The International School from the age of three all the way through 5th grade, studying in the Japanese track. I've now graduated from a masters program and work as a researcher in green tech. Attending TIS was one of the most formative parts of my childhood. Being exposed to such a broad worldview through not just immersion in Japanese, but also from exposure to the Spanish and Chinese tracks, really broadened my perspective and started me along the path towards becoming a global citizen. I've been lucky enough to get the chance to study abroad in Japan three times (twice in elementary school, and once in college), and those experiences would not have been able to be nearly as enriching if not for my existing fluency and familiarity with Japanese culture learned at TIS. Having deep and extensive experiences with cultures outside of the ones I was exposed to at home has been a great benefit to me so far in life. I highly recommend the international school to any family.
My kids graduated from The International School’s Japanese track. The education they received gave them the foundation for exceptional academic achievements. The unique environment at TIS gave them exposure and an appreciation for other cultures and they are truly global citizens.
My daughter is in 2nd grade at TIS, and my family knows we made the best academic choice for her. Not only is she fluent in both Japanese and English, but the TIS IB curriculum is superb. There is a huge focus on the whole student's development as both a critical thinker and ethical citizen. TIS puts a true emphasis on the strengths of diversity. We looked at other programs, but we've seen the student proficiency at Portland Public's Richmond school (an immersion school), and the public schools lag TIS in target language skill, English proficiency, mathematics, and science. Also, the class size at TIS is 10:1 or less (larger classes have an assigned secondary teacher), while most Portland Metro public elementary schools are 28:1.
We have had a wonderful experience at TIS. My child hates missing school even on weekends!!! The teachers have been responsive and it's obvious they care about the kids.
The International School has been amazing for my 3 children. Over the last ten years I have seen great things come from the inquiry based learning, culturally diverse student body and staff and language immersion. My two graduates are fluent in a second language which has and will continue to open doors for them. I could not be happier with the experiences and education that my children had had/are receiving.
TIS is a fantastic choice for an immersion school in Portland. My son has been a student since pre-school, and his progress towards fluency has been amazing to watch. Small class sizes and dedicated teachers have ensured my son not only excels in his second language but also in his overall academics. The IB program has enriched his learning experience as well. Highly recommend!!!
My children are bilingual world citizens thanks to their TIS educations. The Spanish teachers come from all over the planet, and expose the students to a variety of cultures and ways of speaking. The education is excellent, and the community is extremely warm and welcoming. Now that my older daughter has graduated and moved onto another school, I can see how truly special the TIS experience really is.
The International School is a wonderful school. Teachers and staff are warm and welcoming. They use the International Baccalaureate curriculum which is globally focused and rigorous. We sent three kids to school here in the Spanish track. Each child has a very different personality and learning style and each flourished. Their Spanish is perfect!
TIS is an incredible school that fosters a sense of community and student independence. The school really helps students gain a global perspective and prepares students academically.
TIS has been a wonderful experience for both of my children. Not only have they become fluent in a second language, but they have been given the opportunity to experience different cultures on a daily basis. Additionally, the IB program has taught each of my children to be independent thinkers. Finally, the teachers and administrators are top-notch!
Wonderful International Baccalaureate School taught in three different languages (Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese). A culturally diverse education and environment for learning. Challenging curriculum. Children get to study abroad to China, Mexico or Japan in 5th grade and live with a host family, truly putting their language and fluency skills to the test. Highly recommend this school to anyone interested in giving the gift of learning a second language in an immersive environment to their children.
We love The International School. It's been wonderful to watch my kids grow into such enthusiastic learners and inquirers. The academics are very strong. What makes it so special is the language and cultural exposure that the kids get. My 4th grader is now fluent in Spanish, and my youngest eagerly shares new words and phrases. They know that there is a big world out there, and genuinely enjoy sharing in the various cultures and traditions reflected by the community.
