From The International School

For our children, a world of possibilities awaits. If we are to send them out to explore beyond the bounds of our neighborhoods, we must prepare them for the journey.

Since 1990, The International School has been helping to guide and prepare today’s generation of explorers for the challenges of tomorrow. We’re the only school in the U.S. to provide full immersion in Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish under one roof.

We were Portland's first International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) school, which promotes strategic thinking skills and hands-on engagement, rather than memorization and passive learning. This instills a true love of learning within children, and equips them to pursue knowledge throughout life.

Our small classes and international faculty provide a warm, multicultural environment that engages students in academics and the arts. We educate approximately 400 students in preschool through 5th grade.

TIS has been a wonderful experience for both of my children. Not only have they become fluent in a second language, but they have been given the opportunity to experience different cultures on a daily basis. Additionally, the IB program has taught each of my children to be independent thinkers. Finally, the teachers and administrators are top-notch!

The International School is a wonderful school. Teachers and staff are warm and welcoming. They use the International Baccalaureate curriculum which is globally focused and rigorous. We sent three kids to school here in the Spanish track. Each child has a very different personality and learning style and each flourished. Their Spanish is perfect!
Wonderful International Baccalaureate School taught in three different languages (Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese). A culturally diverse education and environment for learning. Challenging curriculum. Children get to study abroad to China, Mexico or Japan in 5th grade and live with a host family, truly putting their language and fluency skills to the test. Highly recommend this school to anyone interested in giving the gift of learning a second language in an immersive environment to their children.
