Great place! Students develop a strong and personal bond with teachers! Harley is a close-knit community that you instantly feel apart of, friendly peers and teachers ensure a safe and productive learning experience. I have been openly gay since the eighth grade (I'm a senior now) and have had no problems with the school or classmates. Harley is a VERY liberal place - yet are open to all viewpoints regardless of gender, sexuality, race, or political status.

The Harley School is a place where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and excel their own expectations, especially with the support of the teachers and the entire community. Being that it is a smaller-sized school, it is easy for everyone to get to know everyone and build relationships that may last for a long time. With small class sizes, students get a full opportunity to get more hands-on learning and communicate well with faculty. Though the statistics for the school shows that the community is very diverse, this diversity appears mainly in the amount of international students that we have studying at the school. Because of this, it is difficult for students of black and latino background, for example, to find comfort and connection in this environment without creating their own space to do so.
I attended the Harley school for grades 5 through 12. My experience is that the upper school faculty is a little wonky but in a great way -- they all have impressive higher ed degrees and experience at more institutional-type jobs, but choose to work at Harley because they love teaching and love their students. Especially leadership in the upper school- the head, Larry Frye, and the new head Ward Ghory, both clearly care immensely about the school and about the students. They are not afraid to give feedback, and not afraid to have difficult conversations with students or parents. I personally had friends who made mistakes and needed "disciplinary action" and Mr. Frye really took the time to explain and talk WITH the student in question instead of AT them, putting himself in a place of peer/leader, which is really tough. Really feel lucky to have been in this environment before college.
