From The Gunnery

The Gunnery was founded in 1850 by Frederick Gunn, a forward thinker who still inspires the traditions we keep. In addition to the habits and skills you will need in college, we teach our students to follow Mr. Gunn’s example: to cultivate wisdom, to be trailblazers, to act with conviction and to value character as highly as intellect and achievement. With an enrollment of 300, our intentionally small size will give you the opportunity to learn these lessons in the ways that work for you. You will leave our campus prepared not only for a life of success, but also for a life of meaning and purpose. Our students learn to think fearlessly and act thoughtfully.

As a student at The Gunnery, you’ll be asked to speak your mind with confidence and compassion. You’ll be asked to embrace all kinds of diversity. You’ll be asked to try, fail and try again. And when you graduate, you’ll be in the company of good people, prepared to embark on a life well-lived.

When researching schools for our son, we were struck by this excerpt from Gunnery's Head of School, Peter Becker: The Gunnery offers many things only possible in a small school: the chance to know and be known by every fellow student; the individualized care for students only possible when every faculty member knows every student by name; multiple early opportunities for leadership and discovery.
We have discovered all this to be true. The Gunnery is an intimate environment filled with passionate, committed educators. Our son feels challenged and encouraged to push himself, knowing he will receive the support he needs to succeed. Even if at first he doesn't!
There is an emphasis placed on the values of character, loyalty, kindness, and perseverance. All traits now valued and sought out by CEOs across the globe.

My son is in his third year at The Gunnery and he loves it. He is engaged with his academics, has great friends, and feels totally at home on campus even though he is a day student. Day students are TOTALLY incorporated into the dorms at The Gunnery, a huge plus for day families. He can sleep over whenever he likes and eat all of his meals on campus. He has friends who didn't even know he was a day student for several weeks! As a day family living in an area with a ton of boarding schools, we were thrilled to find The Gunnery because it treats day students as well as it treats its boarding students.
As a current parent, we are very pleased with our daughter’s experience at The Gunnery. The Gunnery's mission is in line with our family's values, and we appreciate the emphasis on process, self-reliance and character. The school embraces the teachings of its founder, Frederick Gunn, and uses his philosophy as a guide in all that they do. My daughter has found all of her classes to be engaging and appropriately challenging, and even as a day student, feels fully integrated into the life of the school. She appreciates the size of the community - not too big and not too small. The outdoor program (again, one of Mr. Gunn's passions) offers both formal and informal opportunities for students to get outside, off devices, and connecting with peers. The Gunnery is a hidden gem. Nestled on the edges of Steep Rock (a nature preserve) and in a small but engaging town, with a clear mission based simultaneously on its history and on current educational beliefs, The Gunnery is a special place.
