From The Frederick Gunn School
The Frederick Gunn School, founded in 1850, is a co-ed boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12 as well as a post-graduate year. Mr. Gunn had a deep appreciation for the natural world, believing that in nature students understand themselves as humans and their place in the world. He took a principled stand against slavery and spurred students (and the town at large) to examine their beliefs. In addition to the habits and skills students will need in college and life beyond, we teach them to follow Mr. Gunn’s example: to cultivate wisdom, to be trailblazers, to act with conviction, and to value character as highly as intellect and achievement.

FGS has its negatives and positives. The school is surprisingly traditional in its approach to education and the communication is lacking. Over two years, I've had one conversation(initiated by me) with my son's academic advisor. As an educator, I was expecting that my son would receive a truly unique education. What we've seen is overly critical teachers that are clearly inexperienced and utilize outdated pedagogy. My son was met with a full freshman year of criticism despite earning an 89 in this particular teacher's class. Sadly, he avoided taking the honors class again because she was teaching 10th grade and killed his confidence. Another example, is multiple teachers giving "pop quizzes"! I hadn't heard of a teacher giving a pop quiz during my 25 years in education. No one benefits from a pop quiz, our job as educators is to help our student's learn. Pop quiz is a nonsensical gotcha game, there's no room for it. The positives; great sense of community and diverse environment.
Academics are solid and college prep-worthy but not aggressively competitive. The campus is utterly serene with nearby access to the village of Washington Depot, Steep Rock Preserve, Lake Waramaug and Mohawk Mountain Ski Area. Both lifelong athletes and newbies can partake in many sports and coaches are very encouraging for those new to their sports. The fantastic and encouraging dedicated Outdoor Programs Director leads fire pit evenings, hikes, rafting excursions, and overnight camping trips. A brilliant Head of Counseling helps oversee student mental health. Weekend programming includes an ever-changing rotation of on-campus and off-campus activities, e.g.; pumpkin-carving, goat meet-and-greets, movie nights, and shopping trips. Overall, the people are just plain nice - from the faculty to administration to students - and we believe our child is experiencing a safe, supportive and inspiring high school experience where she will make forever friends and learn vital life skills.
Words cannot express how grateful our family is for The Frederick Gunn School. Gunn has guided our daughter into becoming an active citizen, responsible young adult, and forward thinker. This school is the ultimate place for creative minds and brilliant thinkers. In the classroom, you can rely on your child being pushed out of their comfort zone in a way that is exciting and fun. As soon as you step foot on campus there is an overwhelming feeling of “home”. There isn’t a “typical Gunn student”. Students have varying hobbies and passions, all of which are supported. The Frederick Gunn School has given our daughter countless opportunities to do what she loves in and out of the classroom. It is easy to make friends, find likeminded people, and share common interests within the community. Being a Highlander is forever, and joining the Gunn family has been one of the best decisions OUR family, has ever made.
