I have three kids at the school and have been very happy with our multi-year experience there. My kids (who are very different learners from each other) have each benefitted from the progressive approach, the teachers have been wonderful and open to dialogue to address any concerns that I may have, and the school community is warm and supportive. The recent changes in the administration have introduced some of the more ‘traditional’ metrics for academic assessment, while retaining a strong progressive philosophy. Yes, the school won’t appeal to everyone, especially the type A competitive parents who are single-mindedly focused on getting their kids into the Ivy Leagues. However, the school teaches the kids to appreciate the process of learning and discovery rather than rogue memorization driven by test scores and benchmark comparisons.

Our daughter is thriving. She is a bright, engaged, curious child who does not respond well to pressure. At Calhoun, she is learning and growing every day. She transferred here from a more traditional school, and has blossomed from a shy child who was concerned with whether or not she would get a reward at the end of the week for good behavior, to a confident, empowered learner. She reads significantly beyond grade level. She's a 5th grader--I recently emailed her a New York Times op-ed piece, with a note saying she shouldn't read it if she isn't interested. She wrote back: "Very interesting!"

My favorite overall thing aspect of Calhoun is the general culture of kindness. I feel she is safe, not only physically but emotionally. I know that any where she is in the school building, if she is sad or troubled about anything, someone will help. It's a very caring place.
I loved Calhoun. I went there from Kindergarten through twelfth grade and made most of by very best friends there. I was always the most scientific kid in my grade, but nonetheless enjoyed other subjects. The Calhoun School has an incredible English program as well as an unmatched team of college counselors. These two departments prepared me very well for college; even though I wasn't offered the opportunity to take AP's, and never got >B+ in an English class at Calhoun, it set me far above most of my peers in College level writing courses, and prepared me very well for the harsh writing expectations at the university level. I feel very well set for college life and critical thinking as well. Calhoun was a fantastic place to grow up.
