I had just graduated from Beacon (Class of 2018, WOO WOO!) My four years in this high school were, hard and challenging. But my teachers always encouraged me to keep going, and all the sleepless nights of doing homework or catching up with classwork was not for nothing! I received an amazing education and now I'm off UPenn (so excited) UPenn has been my dream college since forever and Beacon helped me achieve it. I love that overall the whole school is so easy going. During free or lunch periods, we can hangout out in the hallways, the library, the staff's rooms (wherever really). Overall my high school experience was worth it.

Solid school, good academics, supportive teachers. Main complaint: some kids wind up with very light workloads while others are drowning in essays, readings, tests, projects etc. Certain teachers disregard the fact that students are taking classes other than theirs... so it can be extremely intense and overwhelming at times. Despite this, teachers have lots of extra hours-- they want you to do well, and will respect you if you respect them. Like any other school, there are numerous flaws. While I have gotten a very good education for the most part, I'm not entirely sure if the stress was worth it!
Beacon is highly overrated and gets by on reputation but does very little to maintain quality. The teachers are unresponsive and the administration is beyond unhelpful. If you do not have money, do not expect to feel comfortable or welcome at the school. I am in education and have been involved in many schools both as a parent and as an educator and I can tell you that the fact that only 42% of the teachers find the principal effective is not something to be taken lightly. From the top down there is little sense of caring or warmth. My son is a junior at the school and if I could undo this decision, I would. My other child did not even put it on the list. My son is a good student and has made friends and done fine academically, but there are so many places where your child will not just get by but thrive. Keep looking!
