I came in and had a very fun freshman year, getting to know people in a challenging environment. But as the years have gone on, I've struggled in a clique-filled environment where many people idolize a small group of mostly white friends deemed good looking.

Beacon can feel isolating, with few support systems if you're not making a serious effort to reach out. It really varies teacher by teacher. What you put in, you'll get out of Beacon. It feels like a very white, competitive environment. Many students idolize a collection of cis white male history teachers, who give college-level work (good) but can abuse their power by lacking sympathy (bad).

Amazing clubs, sports, and academics, but I definitely fell into a depression in the environment. Will likely be an easier transition if you had a good experience with a large middle school. A better advisory system might help, but the key might be giving some more constructive community time during class– the days are high pressure!

Beacon has a wide variety of incredible arts programs, and has both a black box theater, a full-size theater, and a professional music performance space in the basement. Although the school has its issues with diversity, the school community has come together under the leadership of the amazing student unions to push for change in the admissions process and administration. I've loved my time at Beacon despite its flaws; I've learned from some of the most inspiring and helpful teachers there, and tried so many new things that I never thought I would do. Above all, I recommend the Beacon Music program, which has three recording suites, multiple practice rooms, professional equipment, and incredible teachers. In addition, Beacon has a fantastic array of clubs and teams that are open to all students!
Beacon creates such a unique and welcoming environment for students who are looking to find their passion! At Beacon I met so many of my current best friends who have inspired and taught me so much artistically as well as cognitively. The teachers I have had at Beacon have, for the most part, given me very valuable insight in the field they taught; they helped me shape my politics with a more keen eye for details and showed me the trials and tribulations of the real world and how to navigate them.
Through the Beacon music department, I was able to find the trade which I plan to major in college and the career I hope to foster. The music department faculty has given me countless opportunities to experiment musically and to learn the "tricks of the trade" in the music industry.
I have felt nothing but welcomed and valued at Beacon!
