Pros: We were generally pleased with the MS teaching staff at AoA, especially music and math. The school intentionally works to integrate the diverse student body and different student perspectives in the classroom as well as progressive perspectives from academia. That being said, I heard that teachers and staff were not very open to students who had more conservative views. The special ed staff was professional and engaged in their support of students with IEP/504's.
Cons: There was a revolving door of Spanish teachers. The school does well to support underperforming students but struggles to meet the needs of students who are more advanced. School-to-parent communications were inadequate. While it was clear that there was great interest in trying to broaden parent and family engagement, the PTA seemed adrift with minimal support from teachers and school leadership. The school’s facilities are quite poor (no library and very limited areas for students to hang out).

Well designed, thoughtful, program that includes core academics, music, and extracurricular activities. Teachers are engaged and available to parents when needed. My child graduated from 8th grade in June 2019 and her experience was more than I could have hoped for - they embed diversity and respect, and have simple steps to ensure the teachers and others have an eye on the development of each child (soon to be adult).
We love the diversity of the families. The Academy has a strong teaching staff, safe and caring environment and a strong academic and social emotional program. My kids have had a great experience thus far.
