In 2011 we designed a new educational approach that combines classical content and skills with real-world problem-solving. Powered by Constructive Adversity, we are inspiring a new generation of creative problem solvers with a social conscience. And we are growing TEA’s magic in order to reach thousands of young people far beyond the shores of Lake Tahoe.
Tahoe Expedition Academy includes a fully accredited K-12th-Grade school, robust summer programs, and engaging after-school clubs that educate hundreds more young people each year. Our graduates are enrolled in some of the nation’s best colleges and universities and, perhaps more importantly, our current students are having a positive impact on the world around them, right here and right now.

TEA is definitely a good match for our family. We love the focus on adventure as a core part of education. We also believe that social/emotional skills and good friendships are equally important as academics. TEA seems to give equal weight to its three pillars: Adventure, Academics, Character. Before you enroll, you have to really consider if your ideal education balances those three equally. For our active, intelligent, sensitive sons, it is a slam dunk. It is not a traditional education - if you are expecting to see academic rigor presented in a more traditional way, like kids in desks perfecting their spelling skills, you will be disappointed. It is an innovative education that places more importance on things like knowledge retention, life lessons, finding your passion, and cultivating a general curiosity and love of learning.
My son relocated his family after being sold on TEA's vision and different style of expedition-based learning. As in many of the reviews, the academics are not challenging, they don't measure up or transfer over to public schools. Campus life is hectic with lot of games on asphalt. The school has some amazing teachers and mentors who the kids connect with but these teachers never last or left very soon after getting settled. The handful of expeditions are educational but distract from the academic challenges and result in safety issues. The kids usually come back with some situations that require follow-up with the head of the school which have resulted in a position of take it or leave it on most issues that are brought to them. It's hard to get resolution or results that support the school's own written policy. For my son the experience was hard to justify the tuition, poor academics and safety issues and made them question and reevaluate their move to attend TEA.
Our 10th grader is thriving at TEA. We made the move from the South Shore to the North Shore as kids were starting to go back to school after Covid. We didn't have a great experience with online learning, so we wanted him to be back in person. He loves the adventures, backpacking, TEA trips, and especially the focus on crew and team building. He has a great group of friends and although the typical high school sports teams are limited, the after school clubs make up for it (mountain biking, golf, etc.) We were in a Spanish bilingual school before we moved and he is now in Spanish 4, so we didn't lose out on that aspect. We are not the type of parents who stress over test scores or require our kid to get all A’s. For us, the focus on character building and learning to be a kind and engaged community member is more important than grades. We know that he will do well in college given the TEA focus on problem solving, collaboration and community.
