My daughter is finishing her last year at the school and I have a second child I might pull from the school. Sunset is a excellent school with excellent teachers. It caters to kids that are strong academically with only a handful of teachers capable of polishing a diamond in the rough. We found two of those teachers. My son, as with most boys is active and does not feel successfull there. The school has great facilities for a public school, and a nice campus but the kids outdoor access is limited. I appreciate the whole admistative team. I’ve come to terms that the school is not a one size fits all. There is a decent amount of homework. As a business owners my husband and I found it hard to keep up with homework demands and our children’s extracurricular activities. The language program is amazing, I think very few folks would dispute that. Cultural diversity that’s not a “melting pot”as much as a “buffet table”. If your lucky enough to get in try it.

Like Miami itself there are two Sunsets. Sunset Elementary School and Sunset International School. My grandmother taught 3rd grade at Sunset Elementary for 42 years. We had planted a tree behind Room 2 in my her honor and when she was nearing her death, we called the school to see if we could have a reunion there one evening for her and her thousands of students still living in Miami. We also asked if we could purchase a brick for their new courtyard in her honor. We offered $10K. Not only did we never receive a call back nor an email response, we later found out that the tree had been ripped up and the plaque thrown in the garbage. Nice, huh? The school would do well to remember that they are reaping the benefits of the school's great history and the many who came before them.
It works like a private school. Teachers and parents are great. Your kid will make good friends. However, admin staff and especially the Principal have attitude. Either you take it, make the best out of it, and focus on the good things or you leave. And they let you know that "there's the door" and that they have "hundreds of kids on wait list" very early in the game. Also, they focus on Top 20% and demand a lot of home learning. If your kid is not quick learner, he will have a hard time.
