I have overall had a very good experience here! After 5 years, the school has changed a lot, however I am more than happy to soon be an alumni. The food has always been a problem, however spending time with classmates more than makes up for it. The sociability within the school is great, as there is a very good balance of socializing and curriculum being implemented. There is always a push to take higher difficulty courses, which has been made easier with the different levels of difficulty being provided. However, the many changes that IB is undergoing is detrimental to the curriculum, as it remains to be consistently changing and causing difficulties for students.
Sumner Academy provides an excessive amount of stress, College credits via IB classes and opportunities. You will meet some of the best teachers you have ever be taught by while also meeting some teachers that you will absolutely hate or forget. This school will put you through intense stress and will expect you to learn how to manage your time. They do not teach professional skills like time management directly. They only force you in a situation where you need to have these skills. As a student, I can positively say, none of us learned these skills. We just learned the art of procrastination. I took a class that actually taught these skills in this school during my junior year, after three years of being at that school. However, some of the teachers have the ability to change your life. Some of them are truly a gift sent from the skies above. Some of these teachers actually care for their students. Unfortunately, it is assumed as students that all of us are depressed.
Before I started school at Sumner, I thought it would be the best experience ever since it wasn’t a regular high school. It was different regarding to the level of education, how disciplined the students were, and the concentration of preparation for college. However, it was not the best experience. My class ran into many speed bumps with staff and admin- even though we(or I at least) really respected them. I just want to say that the school is not for everyone. Im thankful for my experiences there but there could have been so many things that were executed better and more efficient.
