Summit Public School: Tahoma Reviews

We have 2 children at Tahoma (a Junior and a Freshman). One is twice exceptional. He is gifted in Math and Science… but has Speech and Language Disability. In the past, we have had other experiences where his Abilities were often overlooked and overshadowed by his Inabilities.
Not at Tahoma.

At Tahoma, they embrace his abilities… as a result we saw his confidence grew… Recently, he was even awarded the AP Scholar award from College Board as a Sophomore… and is now doing his 4th college level Math class… while at the same time providing him speech and language support.

Simply, I would sum up our experience at Tahoma as: Embrace Strength, Grow Passion, Build Confidence… while affording room to make Mistakes… and tirelessly providing support for Weaknesses… to each and every student as a unique individual.

Summit Tahoma is a special kind of learning environment that is made for the unconventional student, one who may not excel as well in traditional public schools. Summit offers a unique learning path that is individualized to some degree, which is excellent, however the individualism that is promised does to allow each student to go at their own pace, but instead forces every student to go at the slowest student's pace. Teachers are underpaid and this shows in their performance. School facilities are dirty, small, and a little sad. We've had several bomb threats, evacuations, and other safety concerns. There seems to be some new thing gone wrong every month at Summit Tahoma. Despite all this, I wouldn't have chosen any other high school. Tahoma is a unique experience that I will never forget. The teachers are just as flawed as I am, and that makes me feel understood and heard. Tahoma is the island of misfit toys, and I love it here.
The majority of the teachers are great. They're helpful and encouraging, and they want to see their students succeed. The curriculum revolves around a lot of independent learning time but if a student needs help, they only need to ask a teacher. As for the school events, they're very unorganized and normally aren't able to get a lot of support because of this. Overall, it's a great school, but it still needs organizational improvements. Also, for students who don't enjoy P.E., you're in luck! This school doesn't actually have physical education as an actual class since the administration is more focused on the core classes that will prepare you for college. But they still offer P.E. and sports teams as an extra-curricular choice for students.
