Project-Based Learning at Summers-Knoll

Understanding that projects give students a chance to sustain their inquiry through multiple points of access to the material, SK leverages project-based learning (PBL) as a vehicle to teach students how to engage with multiple perspectives and integrate their own interests and voices into their projects. Our child has been at SK for several years now, and has loved each and every year. We couldn't have imagined a more fantastic educational experience. The intentionally small class sizes and personalized approach allows each kid to be incredibly well known. There are no kids at SK who are left behind or can hide in the back of the classroom. Each child receives the full attention of the teachers, is integrated into all of the experiences and is truly cared for like a family member. By the time our kid finished kindergarten, all of the teachers in the school (from K to 8th) knew our child well. You can't beat that kind of attention and awareness of your kid. It's within this context of being known and supported that SK then works its magic, excelling consistently at developing children who are intrinsically motivated, hard working, curious, love to learn, know themselves, and are willing to make mistakes and then try again. We love SK!

Review Summers-Knoll School

My kids transferred to Summer's Knoll after being at another private school in Ann Arbor. I knew almost immediately that it was the right fit! The small classroom sizes alongside of the "student lead" philosophy gave my kids exactly what they needed. There isn't a better feeling that having your children absolutely love going to school. Not only is project based learning the way of the future, it also allows my kids to learn in a style that works for them! I'm very grateful for the wonderful teachers and the beautiful environment at Summer's Knoll. I highly recommend!

The area has several excellent private school options. Summers Knoll occupies a niche that no other school does. SK is a leader in project based learning. Projects are chosen based on the students/grades interests. The projects involve core academic disciplines, such as reading, math, science, technology etc . There is a weekly school assembly during which different grades/clubs take turns presenting their projects. This gives the students exposure to public speaking, developing their reflective and presentation skills. Time in the curriculum is carved out to allow each student to have more experience in area of interest i.e music, technology, art, and drama. We have seen our son thrive, socially emotionally and academically. The classroom teachers as well as the specials teachers approach each child as a whole person. Small class sizes allow for students to advance in academic disciplines that they are already competent in and receive support in areas where they need it.
