I attended Strath Haven from 2014 to 2018. It is a public high school in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The school takes great pride in its musical programs, especially the marching band which is often a bigger draw to Friday night football games than the game itself. In terms of diversity, Strath Haven does a great job of teaching students about acceptance through a program the high school runs called 'diversity training.' This program teaches students how to facilitate sessions at the middle school to help the younger kids in the district understand the importance of diversity and tolerance. Academics at Strath Haven are rigorous and, especially at the honors level, prepares students exceptionally well for college.

The academics are excellent, particularly in math. However, it’s very competitive. There is also a big split between “STEM” students and “humanities” students; and often students feel pressured to “double up” (which takes advantage of the block scheduling) in math or science classes to get ahead and feel adequate compared to their peers. There is also a lot of work to be done in making sure students of color are performing as highly as white students—because they make up a tiny, tiny fraction of the honors/AP track. Overall, I had an amazing experience at Strath Haven and will always remember many of my teachers.
Strath Haven is a unique school, combining challenging academics with an emphasis on exploring interests outside of the classroom. AP courses are offered in abundance and block scheduling is very helpful to allow in-depth teaching. Teachers work to help any student succeed if the student wants to. The school also has a daily schedule that allows people to become very involved with both simultaneously, blurring the lines between the sterotypical “jocks” and “band nerds.” Strath Haven is most well-known for is its marching band, which is one of the largest in the country with over 400 students (⅓ of the student body).

Most students attend college after graduating, and are admitted to a range of schools including Ivy League schools, state schools, and specialized institutions.

Strath Haven is a great high school that encourages students to pursue their interests and explore their academic passions. It can be stressful at times, but it prepares you well for the real world.
