I loved the rigorous curriculum and I had always felt that there were opportunities for growth. I was always able to challenge myself in some way, academically and socially. While the academic aspect is easier to adapt to, the culture of the school is somewhat rigid and uninviting- especially to those with more diverse ethnic backgrounds. Bullying is quite rampant and the efforts to diffuse such social alienation were not attempted by students or teachers. The teachers often assign work that is less than preparatory and find difficulty connecting with the students and their mental health. Many of them treat certain students with preferential treatment, leaving the other students feeling unincluded. There was a lockdown incident where several classes, including my own, were escorted out of the school by police and SWAT. Several threats had been made the year prior, and a safe ED that had been hired made threatening, racist remarks on his social media.
Stoney Creek High School is the best place for my education. The staff cares so dearly about the students, and there are so many opportunities for all students. Robotics, sports, fine arts, theatre, music, clubs etc. Stoney Creek has a place for everyone. The counselors ensure academic success, college readiness, but most importantly, emotional stability. Administration supports everything the students do. Every swim meet, basketball game, choir concert, science fair, NHS event, etc. They are always there! Our choirs have been chosen for national conferences, to sing with the Pope's own Sistine Chapel Choir, tour Europe, and sing with multiple professional ensembles. We consistently have students that qualify for National Merit Scholarship awards, students who sign to play sports in college, students who attend wonderful universities and conservatories, and students who are ready to follow their own paths. I say with confidence that the teachers here at Stoney are above and beyond.
It is a great school! The teachers genuinely care and want students to succeed academically. Like any school, there are teachers and students who may make some days more difficult, but they are in the minority.
