Stockton Unified Early College Academy Reviews
Rating 4.04 out of 5 135 reviews
A very good school in not the best part of town. Students and staff are willing to help, although some teachers can be a bit rude. There isn't much encouragement when it comes to academics. People claim to be busy busy and that's why everyone is okay with the massive procrastination and culture of laziness going on. The poor TAs! The emphasis is definitely on extracurriculars, of which there aren't actually that many. If you've heard about how you can get an Associate's degree here, it's true. Our student-teacher ratio is so high because our many professors aren't accounted for in that metric. Still, classes of 30+ students are normal. I know all this makes it sound like I hated SECA, so final pieces of advice: advocate for yourself, take risks, and try to have some fun! YOLO!
As a freshman it is all extremely overwhelming because not only are you trying to find out who you are, you also must focus on adapting to becoming a high school and college student all at once. There are times where everything seems like it is never-ending and the experiences are not what you imagined going into high school. The most important part about attending this school is essentially always remembering the end goal because by the time you graduate you will have earned your AA degree along with your high school diploma and filled out most of your IGETC requirements. You will be ahead of the game before the average student even gets there and you will look back on the tough times and it will be worth it. As a senior now, I am thankful I chose this place because it has shaped me into who I needed to be to accomplish my goals and pursue my career of choice.
When I started at SECA, I was scared to start college classes and the immense pressure I would soon be facing. However what I was overwhelmed with was support and teachers who cared if you passed or failed. Teachers pushed us as students to actually try and feel proud of our accomplishments, and to take pride in our failures. To take pride that we failed and then have the chance to do better, because they always allowed us second chances to correct our failures. These teachers helped shape us into good students and better people. They taught the values in community and culture as well as honesty and integrity. They provided clubs that were academic and artistic and real in that they allowed us to dive into our interests and connect with other people who had the same interests. The schools honor code taught us integrity and to always do what was right. Other schools in Stockton should thrive to do what the teachers and the counselors do to help us as students.
